Metrics of Data Measure

We have metrics to measure the data size. From bit to Petabyte.

1. Bit is either  0 or 1, true or false. It is the basic unit of data in computer.

2. Nibble is four bit or half of byte. ( 4 bit == 1 Nibble)

3. Byte consists of 8 bit. ( 8 bit == 1 Byte )

4. Word consists of 16 bit. (16 bit == 1 Word )

5. Kilobyte is 1024 byte. ( 1024 byte == 1 KB )

6. Megabyte is 1024 Kilobyte ( 1024 kilobyte == 1 Mb )

7. Gigabyte is 1024 Megabyte ( 1024 Megabyte == 1 GB)

9. Terabyte is 1024 Megabyte ( 1024 Gigabyte == 1 TB)

10. Petabyte is 1024 Megabyte ( 1024 Terabyte == 1 PT)

Speed at which Data is Transferred

Speed of transfer of data between any two device can be measured using the speed metrics. It various from bps to Gbps

1. bps- bits per second

2. Kbps- kilobits per second

3. Mbps- Megabits per second

3. Gbps- Gigabits per second.

NOTE: Small b refer bit while B refer byte. Be cautious while writing the notations.

Reason behind the metrics post is people often fail to realize the potential of data growth over the decade. In the advent of internet, data started to explode in size .
